OKALA Supports SB 629
Oklahoma’s senior population is facing a crisis.
Unless the current litigation flood is stemmed, the
resulting cost of liability insurance may take the
cost of all types of care from doctor’s visits to
Assisted Living out of reach for our seniors.
* Since 1995, claims per bed loss costs are
increasing at a 20 percent average annual rate.
* The average ALF claim is $60,000.
* In 2001, the average assisted living provider saw
a 130 percent increase in general
liability/professional liability coverage-on top of
2000 increases.
* In 2002, the average assisted living provider saw
a 50 percent increase in coverage-on top of 2001's
increase.
We believe that SB629 will be a first step to reduce
the risk for insurance carriers, thereby making
insurance once again affordable for providers of all
types of medical care covered by Title 63 of the
Oklahoma Statute, which includes physicians,
hospitals, Assisted Livings, and nursing homes.
OKALA represents the Assisted Living industry in the
state of Oklahoma employing 3200 staff members to
care for over 4300 senior residents who are
receiving no federal or state assistance for their
housing.
OKALA is joined in support of SB 629 by:
Oklahoma State Medical Association
Oklahoma Association of Health Care Providers
Oklahoma Association of Homes and Services for the
Aging
Oklahoma Residential Assisted Living Association
